Singapore Standard Industrial Classification (SSIC)

What is SSIC in Singapore?

The Singapore Standard Industrial Classification (SSIC) is the official system used to classify economic activities in Singapore. It is applied in population censuses, business and household surveys, and administrative records to ensure consistency in data reporting and analysis across industries.

The Process of Finding the Right SSIC Code

Understanding the importance of selecting the correct SSIC code for your business, here are three primary methods to help you identify the right one:

Method 1: Grof’s SSIC Search Tool

Grof’s SSIC Code Checker is a free and user-friendly tool designed to help you quickly identify the most suitable SSIC code for your business activities. It streamlines the classification process and ensures alignment with Singapore’s industry standards.

Method 2: ACRA’s SSIC Code Search via BizFile+

ACRA’s BizFile+ portal also offers a helpful SSIC code search function. To use it:

  • Go to the BizFile+ portal and locate the ‘Find SSIC code for business activities’ section.
  • Enter a relevant keyword (use a single word for better results) that describes your business.
  • Click ‘Search’ to view matching results.
  • Review the list and select the code that best reflects your business operations.

Method 3: Referencing the Latest SSIC Code List

For a more detailed approach, refer to the full SSIC code list maintained by the Singapore Department of Statistics. The latest edition (14th), released in November 2021, reflects current industry trends.

Tips for using the list effectively:

  • Use the keyword search function to locate relevant codes.
  • For online marketplace businesses, search terms like “online,” “on-line,” or “on line” may yield better results.
  • If your business activity is unique and not directly listed, you may include a custom business description in your ACRA registration.
  • Codes ending in ‘9’ and marked N.E.C. (Not Elsewhere Classified) are general-purpose classifications. Only choose an N.E.C. code if no other code accurately represents your business.

What should be considered while choosing the Right SSIC Code for Your Business Activities?

The first step in selecting an SSIC code is identifying your company’s principal activity. This is essential, as SSIC codes are based on economic activities — defined as processes where resources like labour, capital, and goods or services are used to produce output.

Under SSIC 2020, economic activities are classified into three types:

- Principal Activity: The main activity that contributes the most to the value added (VA) or revenue of the business.

 - Secondary Activity: Any other activity the company undertakes that is not its main revenue driver.

 - Ancillary Activity: Support functions such as HR, accounting, or marketing that facilitate production but don’t generate revenue directly.

For example, if your company’s main business is selling mobile phones, that’s your principal activity. Repair services could be a secondary activity, while sales support and admin functions are considered ancillary.

When registering a company in Singapore, you must select at least one SSIC code that best represents your principal activity. You may also choose a second code for a secondary revenue-generating activity.

If your business activity is too niche to fit an existing SSIC code, you can provide a customised description during registration on ACRA’s BizFile+ portal.
